Water Gardens - Fish Care
Fascinating Fish
Fish can make wonderful pets as well as aquatic garden attractions. These finned friends eat pests such as mosquito larvae, aphids, and other insects. They also consume algae as a routine part of their diet. Goldfish, Shubunkins and Fantails are excellent, practical choices for ponds in this area. Another popular choice is Koi!
How many fish should your pond have?
For a low-maintenance water garden keep no more than 1" of fish per square foot of pond surface. Adding a high-density filter system will improve water quality and allow you to stock more fish in your pond.
Feeding your fish
Depending on the water temperature, pond fish have different nutritional requirements and feeding habits. At water temperatures of 50°F or above, feed your fish only as much as they can consume in five minutes, resulting in less waste and pollution.
In the winter, when the water temperature drops below 50°F, pond fish require no food. At below-freezing temperatures fish are dormant.
Snails and Tadpoles
Nature's cleaning crew! Snails consume fish waste and decaying plant matter, helping to reduce algae growth. They also groom algae from plants and pots, keeping it in check.
Tadpoles are on constant algae control, eating it continuously during the day. You can never have too many snails or tadpoles in your pond!
